Summary

Work to provide Rotherham with a new railway station in the town centre has now begun. The £8.5m scheme draws investment from ERDF, Yorkshire Forward, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Northern Rail and Network Rail.

The present station will undergo extensive changes, including the creation of a new ticket office, a waiting lounge and a retail kiosk. Access to platforms, particularly for the disabled, will be improved by installing lifts.

Malcolm Taylor, who manages the investment of ERDF said: “European support is essential if important projects like this are to go ahead, especially in the current economic climate. Yorkshire Forward and Europe are pleased to be involved, working in partnership in the region to help regenerate Rotherham’s infrastructure for local people and provide rail passengers with this superb facility.”

Rotherham Council is also contributing to the impact of the scheme by improving the public space around the station. Cllr Gerald Smith, Rotherham’s planning and economic development spokesman said: “Almost half a million people a year use the station, so this project is a real boost for Rotherham town centre. It will provide a public transport facility Rotherham people can be proud of.”
